er, musical update time. been working on a electro/bleepy tune with a hip hop beat. thats almost finished, but needs the levels fixing. the beat was inspired by J DIlla, the bleepiness by the Debruit/Hudson Mohwake skool of hip hop. Also made a nice chill out track in a group with fluctutating members. It was a sound collage KLF style tune but has now morphed into something slightly more musically coherent thanks to a new group member joining and bringing along a fresh pair of ears, not to mention beats.
Bought myself an Akai LPD8 today.......fun.
The Star Wars video is coming along, I have done a kind of test run of a minute of it using library and downloaded sounds but I really want to record my own. Did make some recordings last weekend in the cellar at work, not sure if they will be good enough. Maybe some will be usable in some kind of robot noise type thing.
Er, nothing else.

Chill Out
Yeh yeh so ages since last post again. Been b-u-s-y. With what? Music mainly. And kung fu of course but this blog is about music so less of the fu and more of the beats.
We have been working in groups in our Digital Music Design lecture. Our group has ended up making an ambient track, which has been great for me as this kind of thing is floating around my head a lot right now, I am reading "Oceans Of Sound" by David Toop which is highly recommended to anyone interested in interesting music. It is a great history of ambient music, going way back to 18th century stuff coming over to Europe from the Far East through to people like Sun Ra, Miles Davies, Eno (of course), Stockhausen etc etc. The book is an EDUCATION in its own right. I may buy it so I have my own copy to keep.
Anyway, our track samples Santana guitars drums and atmospheres, Jose James keys, some random Portugese female vocal, jazzy piano and 1950s radio broadcasts. The idea is for it be music to fall asleep to. Inspiration from the likes of.......
Have recently been working on some other solo production stuff, http://www.sendspace.com/file/ty7xnv">a funk remix of "Sexual Healing" and a kind of electro robo funk track (that isn;t quite ready yet). Also, for Sound and Image module I am working on a 2 minute clip from the Clone Wars cartoon, of Mace Windu fighting a bunch of robots. I have to do the sound design for the piece, so sound effects and any music. Really interesting researching it (being a complete Star Wars geek) plus I am doing a hip hop Star Wars tune to go with it. Sweet.
Other projects are helping try to get the uni radio station going, setting up a food co-op (non musical!) and buying a lot of old vinyl. I am also the proud owner of some 2nd hand 1200s........haaaappppppyyyyyy

Gives You Wings
Yeh, so a very long time since my last post. But I've been busy. And some of the stuff I have been busy with will get posted up here. But for now, here's an interesting link to a story about electronic musician Matthew Herberts failed attempt to record the sounds of a pigs lifecycle from birth to death and onto someones plate http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/feb/11/matthew-herbert-pig-slaughter
Yesterday was all about the Red Bull Music Academy at the ICA, which was absolutely brilliant. I got there early, 3.30, in fact before it even started at 4 to avoid missing out. Luckily this meant I got to spend about 20 minutes chatting with/learning from Wookie about producing in general and specifically Logic.
After that I watched an interview with dubstep producers Ramadanman and Pangea and then took a break, so sat and read my book (David Toop's "Ocean of Sound") and had some Spanish Omelette and a cappucino.
I managed to secure myself a spot on a sofa for the next interview session with the legend that is Jazzie B. He was very entertaining, a 45 interview with some great anecdotes about his experiences in the music industry and how his career developed and played some key tracks from his childhood and career, including "London Beats", a breaks record he put out in 1985 that was mixed live, proper old skool stuff. He saved the only well known Soul II Soul beats until the very end with a remix of Back To Life that rocked the ICA bar and crowd as he invited everyone to the Sound Clash on Wednesday night
I also got to see a bit of Andreya Triana doing a vocal workshop but sadly I had to work in the pub that night so I left around 8pm, missing the live performances of the evening. Oh well, it was certinly a brilliant way to spend a Saturday afternoon, the event was brilliantly well organised and oozing with enthusiasm, appreciation and passion for music.
